In this interview, Bill Lauderback breaks down how close the grid came to failing during Winter Storm Uri in 2021. Texas was within 4 minutes and 37 seconds of a black-start failure. That kind of failure would have taken weeks or months to recover from. The response from lawmakers led to a new plan to expand the state's transmission system, with a specific focus on the Permian Basin. That region produces a large share of the country's petroleum and natural gas.
Lauderback also explains why Texas is moving to 765-kV transmission lines. These towers stand about 180 to 200 feet tall. But one 765-kV line carries the same power as three standard 345-kV lines. That means fewer towers and less land needed across private property.
ERCOT expects peak demand to climb from about 85 gigawatts to nearly 150 gigawatts in the coming years. Building high-capacity lines is not optional anymore. It is what keeps the Texas economy growing.
